I understand not wanting your establishment to look unprofessional or unsafe but god damn man, let people without homes have somewhere to sleep they're not pigeons.
Tbh if this is a doorway being frequented by anyone on a regular basis then this could easily be a matter of safety rather than a "keeping the riff-raff away" mentality.
'
I'm all for homeless people having places to sleep, but a lot of them can have drug problems and/or mental health issues, and can express erratic behavior, leave dangerous materials behind (needles etc), and a myriad other issues. And no, I'm not saying all of them do or are like this. But many are. And at the end of the day, this is a doorway to a building and having people sleeping there was very likely disruptive to the building.
I agree on the point of safety. Don’t want to block a doorway in case of emergency. But then wouldn’t the poles be an issue, too? I can’t imagine that’s easy to navigate when trying to exit the building quickly, especially in a large group of people.
Safety doesn't just include the ability to make a quick exit - although that is another valid reason. I imagine the poles would be easier to navigate than stepping over another human being - and either way, the person on the ground would be in danger of being trampled during an emergency.

I've encountered people who are passed out, needles scattered all around them. Some are extremely aggressive asking for money. One man who was quite likely homeless followed me and the people I was with a short distance across a parking lot, raving about burning down buildings and such.
'
And that's not including other peoples' encounters. Some carry weapons. Some just get disorderly. Some expose themselves. Some propose. Some are perfectly reasonable and just down on their luck.
Again - this is not a commentary on whether homeless people should have places to sleep. But the doorway of a building will never be that place- - especially if the person is literally bringing a mattress and setting up camp in the doorway.
I think this particular individual was simply being a smartass. No homeless person is bringing a box to put a mattress on everywhere they go. I would say they just wanted to make a point about how excessively they did this.
Bút that design is shit yea.
