I think if the disabled person isn't getting out of the car you shouldn't use the spot either. My mom who has cancer and is disabled went to the store with my brother driving. They had to park half way into the parking lot because all the handicapped parking was taken. And they saw in a parked car still running an elderly man who clearly was the disabled person. The driver his grandkid came HOPPING DAMN NEAR out the store to the car. Meanwhile my mom had to sit on her Walker that has a chair attached and have my brother push her to the front because they had to park so fucking far away.
Its ahit like that makes me wish for huge penalties for people who use the plaques either with out the disabled person in the car or with out them going in.
Well- it’s decidedly more complex. In my days as a young man, I received my share of injury; once I found my insides on the outside- very unpleasant. As a result of this- they put my insides back in minus the left over spare parts- and I was quite weak for some time. Many folks would see a 20 odd year old kid getting out of a sports car in a handicapped spot with no braces or obvious handicaps but parked in a handicap space and harass me- something I had little disposition or energy to deal with at the time. We can’t always tell a persons disability- and a “fat person” in a handicapped space is obviously “fat,” but is that their disability or is there something else? You don’t really know if you aren’t their doctor or close associate.
That said- the sentiment “fatty should run!” Is oft repeated and ignorant. People overweight enough to be disabled often literally cannot run. Of their weight has caused organ problems they could literally have a heart attack just from walking too far. Their joints may quite literally be unable to support their weight and could suffer failure and/or permanent damage that will last even if they lose the weight. Being extremely overweight limits your options for safe exercise. Why do you think every sport and fitness thing tells you to consult a doctor? It covers their ass sure- but it’s largely not meant for the person of close to average health. It’s means for the person who could literally die or be crippled by misguided attempts at being healthy.
For those who fit this category, when I train them I usually start them off with some stretches as able, some resistance training or weights, and swimming is my go to. Low impact, lots of other reasons- but those “biggest loser” “I lost 100lbs in 3 months” type things aren’t healthy. They hardly ever last long term, and you will very likely fuck your body and health up. The physical and chemical changes that can occur at extreme weight aren’t the same as when you need to drop 10lbs to fit your beach wear. Slashing a diet from 6000 calories to 1200 over night and going from sitting for decades to walking a block can literally kill you. You have to give your body time to adapt.
Being overweight or suffering cardiovascular, liver, kidney, diabetes, and other possible effects of poor diet and lifestyle are disabilities. “They did it to themselves!” Yeah. So did you when you broke your back skiing, broke your ankle hiking, when that lifetime of carcinogens Gave you cancer, blah blah. Should all those people have no handicap parking access or accommodations? People don’t seem to pull that one out for those things as often do they? Disabled is disabled. It’s when you are less able. It’s in the fucking name.
Keep in mind that being disabled makes it easy to be fat. Disabled people are often poor as a result of not being able to work and spending money on healthcare. Poor people don't have as good access to healthy foods. Being disabled can make moving painful and/or difficult, and thus exercising can become near impossible. Some people with thyroid issues become overweight, and their being overweight is their disability. Sometimes, people are disabled and happen to also be fat.
Abled people, please stop policing who is and isn't disabled. You say that you do it in our best interest, but you never advocate for us or donate to our causes when we need it. You are silent on our issues until it comes to people who you decide are "scamming" disability benefits, and when you decide who deserves a parking spot. And everyone likes to pretend that when they yell at fat people, they are doing it in their best interest. But do they yell at people who are "fat on the inside" to exercise? Do they polic
So you know nothing about brain diseases and cancers. A tumor on or around your pituitary gland causes randomized obesity. Look at children and teens with brain cancers, they blow up in size and developed what is called moon face.
If you don't know what someone is going through, leave them alone.
