Partial truth. Quicksand is very saturated sand. To simplify things a lot- Think of it like a pool of water with LOTS of fine sand in it. How far you can sink is firstly dependent on how far the quicksand goes. Deeper quicksand requires the ground to be sand like substrate for the depth you may sink, and enough water and agitation to saturate that much sand. Commonly quicksand isn’t much deeper than your feet. Ever stand on the beach where the tide comes in and let the sand swallow your feet? That’s basically quick sand.

Now- it’s much easier to float in quicksand than pure water- just as it’s easier to float in salt water. Lots of tiny particles to help you float. You CAN drown in quicksand. Flailing about or vibrating the water will cause the sand to move away and leave more water, the sudden unexpected loss of buoyancy can cause you to sink a bit, the sand settles back in and now you are restricted by the surprising weight of the semi solid sand.

Quicksand isn’t the danger many movies and fictions make out- it doesn’t actually suck you in like some vortex, and it’s relatively easy to get out of, and as stated is usually more of a nuisance than a real danger in foot- in a vehicle or carrying heavy gear it can be very dangerous though if you find a large and deep patch- but MOST isn’t that deep. In a survival situation wet feet, lost energy, and possibly lost shoes can be a real problem though. So like many dangers it is mitigated by the fact we tend to have resources of civilization to rely on. Even the common flu was once very dangerous. It’s sort of like that.

If you encounter deep quicksand- don’t flail or move quickly. Slow and deliberate movements. It’s easy to float so if you can raise your legs and back float you’re pretty much fine.

All that taken into account, quicksand is still far less of a problem than my childhood led me to believe

Our childhoods also led us to believe we'd be involved in a lot more fires, and that we frequently would be offered drugs.

So what you're saying is it's safe to stick your dick in quicksand?

At some point I've seen a video of a guy trying to demonstrate how to get out of quicksand if you ever get surprised and basically he just died while screaming for help. So he did not do a very good job
