Here's the thing though: Disney is going to make their money anyway. We'll all see their movies, bitch about them, then see the next one. That's how all this works now.
I'd agree with this, except... Sony never made a counter-offer. Somy was never interested in making a second deal. Disney never expected to get a 50/50 split. They used that as a starting point for negotiation.
Disney had already agreed to 5% while Sony was fully funding the movie. Disney wanted to start paying for half the movie and split the profits right down the middle. Sony who already knows how they benefit from the existing deal said no to Disney, and counteroffered to keep there current mutual benefitial deal. Disney is greedy and wants to take more away from Sony.

I love that some people are feeling all "fight the power" by siding with Sony, completely disregarding that Sony is a massive company too.
I actually saw someone call a guy a "corporate shill" for siding with Disney.
