Well... half true. Mostly. He didn’t say the US was “allies” with. He said that the US shares politics and culture etc with Italy going back to Ancient Rome. The way he stated it makes it sound like he’s saying the US is that old- but leaves it open to interpretation that he’s referencing the fact our democracy etc. are rooted in Ancient Rome. Either way he phrased it poorly at best. The Mozzarella part is 100% true. The Italian President is President Mattarella. So it’s slightly less funny than if he’d called like “President Grasso” Mozzarella. It seems to be just garden variety bafoonery as opposed to complete and total idiocy.
Buuuut... (and I'm hardly anybody who would defend Tr-mp)) he didn't say anything about the two countries being allies since ancient Rome, just "suggesting that the United States and Italy are ‘bound together by a shared cultural and political heritage dating back thousands of years to Ancient Rome’"
Yeah. The “Allies” part isn’t in the quote. What he SAID and what he MEANT TO SAY may not be the same here. If he was trying to reference the US systems roots in Ancient Rome, the way he phrased his statement implies the US has been around since ancient times. Now- he could have misspoke, he could have assumed people would understand what he meant since obviously the US isn’t that old, or it may have been intentional- it’s a tactic and one he is known to use. He can easily claim he never said the US was that old, but by simply saying something it implants a suggestion in peoples minds. Associating the US with Ancient Rome May have been his goal. Or... he may just be a daffy old man. At this point it’s anyone guess. But the quote is being twisted here.
