As long as you're still serving milllions of people there is no problem.

Yeah.... you don’t even need millions. When I worked in sales for a company that did relatively low volume sales- we used to tell people to get bent all the time. “I’ll go to your competitor!” Please. Do. That’s how I used to put competitors out of business. The question is ask these “customers” was: “what makes you think I WANT your business?” A customer is no good to me if they don’t make me money.

If you’re primarily price shopping- you aren’t my customer. Let someone else bend over backwards to give away inventory. Then they can deal with your support needs and spend man hours of labor on “serving” you and since they made no profit whoring out the sale- they don’t make money. You cost them money.

Let their people and phones and resource be tied up with your neediness or tantrums. Let them get a bad rap for having whiners and screamers and people who will bad mouth them all day for any perceived wrong. I don’t want you here. Return too much? Frequent claims? I don’t want you. Every one of those costs me labor to process and other costs like freight that I likely eat (and you’ll whine and stomp on any costs to you like restocking.) I can’t help other clients of all my day is baby sitting you can I? Go away.

Drag someone else down. I’d figure out who the whores were and send people that way that were trouble. When the low cost “we take anyone” guys got hit by the mess of a flood of terrible customers I’d buy them out. Then close them and take any good assets they had and fold them in- sell the rest (to choke anyone dumb enough to buy that crap,) and make my next kill easier.

Over 20 years me and my partner killed every single competitor save for 3 in a 300 mike radius. One of those 3 we bought and kept open for the location. The other 2 were idiots with deep pockets who couldn’t keep promises. If you were ANYWHERE in half the state you either bought from me- or you dealt with morons who would end up costing YOU time and money. And when you’re the last man standing- you make all the rules. There is no negotiating. No tantrums.

I’ll tell you to leave, and you can deal with someone else. Need it today? Oh.... better get moving. It’s a long drive to the next guy. Better yet- of poach suppliers. Anything good? I’d buy it all up. 6 months + back order and I’m sitting on millions of dollars in over stock because I will eventually sell it all- and no one else will have it. The guy you call will buy it from me. If I find out its you (and I probably will-) I either won’t sell it to him, or I’ll gouge him hard AND purposely drag my feet so he doesn’t get it for a week.

He figured he’d have it tomorrow. That’s what you were told. It doesn’t show up. He looks like an idiot. If you REALLY need it- you come back to me with your tail tucked. I gouge you for it but hey- now you know who is in charge and who will actually do what they say and come through. I keep the other guys money and send his stuff even though I stole his sale. I gouged him so the profit is nice. He won’t sell another one. So I’ll buy it back at a discount in a year when he unload it as over stock.

Or... be like all these other businesses and whore yourself out. Your call. The customer is not alway right. If the customer was right they wouldn’t need someone to tell them what they need to fix their shit. The customer thinks they are right. You an be a “Home Depot” staffed largely with people who can’t help and aren’t there because they’re baby sitting- or you can staff professionals who know what they are doing and don’t mess around so are actually there to help people.

YOU train the customer what to expect. Did you train them that tantrums and playing “lets make a deal” are the game- that’s the customer you get. Train them to give you what you need to do your job, pay, and leave- and boom. Everyone can be happy. It’s like house breaking an animal. No one ever taught these people not to shit on the rug. If you shit on my rug you will learn not to.
