That's what made Judaism such a unique religion; every culture has their gods, and they're petty, arrogant, and unpredictable, like life in BC times. But then the Jewish people say, "Not only is there only ONE god, but he'll actually protect you and help you if you follow his rules". That was a revolutionary concept when compared to everyone else.
I read a book by my dude JJ Rousseau in which he said all these nonsensical rules were actually meant to cement the nation, and divide it from all the others. Interesting perspective imo.
Can't remember the name exactly but it was about the Polish government. Considerations on the Government of Poland, I think? By the name you can already guess that the whole book isn't like the part I described, it's mostly practical tips for the then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
