I honestly do not and would probably never understand expensive rings and how they contribute in ANY way to a meaningful relationship

I think it's from an old tradition of the husband using some months of his salary to buy the ring and prove he can support the family.

It does indeed stem from there and now marketing had taken the place of this tradition, banking on a doubtful "If you love her you shouldn't even worry about money" point of view that does seem to work with a vast majority of people.

that is just bad economics and wasted money, the resale would have gouged you for money if you just replaced it like that. wait a few weeks and then just buy the ring as a couple you just netted an unnecessary loss at a time when you need to start financial planning together and you clearly have limited funds.
