Ok, but how fast do gravity waves travel? Could we potentially communicate faster than light with them or, of they're light speed or slower, could we be influenced by residual gravity?
Okay so a misconception about the speed of light is that it's an arbitrary value set by Light. It's actually not.
'Light' speed is actually the Speed at which information can propegate through causality/spacetime. Like how sound can only travel through air so quickly, light and any manner of wave can only travel through space so quickly. That limit is pretty hard set, at it's roughly 3x10^8 value we all know and love.
The reason it's called light speed, is because light is the first wave that comes to mind. And the reason light traves this speed is because it's massless and subsequently doesn't get 'dragged' by it's own gravity deformations in spacetime (I think, don't quote me on that part, shit's very complicated and it's been a while).
So anyways, to actually answer your question.
They travel the speed of light. And yeah! The way we detect gravitational waves is with really long metal tubes here on earth, and as the waves deform spacetime, it changes the distance light has to travel slightly, which we can detect.
You're feeling these waves almost every hour. If not more frequently. It's just impossible to notice because you are deform along with the rest of spacetime.
Yeah, like. This shit is gotta be so damn precise to detect these things.
Like, so very precise that they had to create a device called the "quantum vacuum squeezer" to stop the spontaneous fluctuations of subatomic energy from interfering with the data.
Basically, the effect is so damn tiny that even a vacuumn was too noisy to grab the smaller ones.
Yeah, didn't crickets become a problem at one point? Like... crickets not even close to the damn thing. Tectonic activity is a constant issue, but most of that can be filtered out.
Everything is a lot. Is why I was trying to break things down a bit
The Speed of Light is a universal constant, one of the many Constants. Nothing, not energy or mass, can move through space faster. The same way that no matter how loud you talk, sound will always travel at the same speed.
The Constant, however. is constant in every possible reference frame. Staying still? 3x10^8. Moving 2 m/s shy of the speed of light? Still 3x10^8.
This, kinda makes absolutely no sense. So what's happening to cause it? Simply, space and time are deforming. Almost literally bending over backwards to do so.
The faster you move, Space compresses. Personal Time slows relative to an outside observer. Basically: "Moving fast? F l a t S t a n l e y - ZA WARUDO-"
And actually, this paragraph probably isn't very helpful. Hm.
The theory was designed to explain an inconsistency we observe that is time dilation. How and why moving fast seemed to affect one's passage through time.
(Cont.)
The reason large things ALSO dilate time is because causality/reality can't tell the difference between gravity and constant acceleration. Except that gravity isn't going to take infinite energy, but that's neither here nor there.

Space is bendy. Time is Bendy. Subsequently, they bend.
What part is like, the most troublesome here? What's the most confusing.
