This really happened. Here’s the part that gets left out: The carjacker didn’t have a gun. Well- a real gun. He had a replica aka non functional gun. I’m not saying the guy who fought him wasn’t brave or anything. I’m saying the guy jacking him couldn’t have shot if he wanted too, so the outcome of that fight likely would be different if you could actually get shot.
In America we have lots of illegal guns. People tend to have real guns. Alex Gong, world championship ISKA Muay Thai Kickboxer, undefeated in K1, and holding several other honors for martial arts- was shot to death outside the gym when he confronted a man who got his parked car and tried to drive away from the scene. If a world championship fighter can lose a fight unarmed vs gun- what’s that say for Jim the pudgy accountant who last fought in 3rd grade? Sometimes you can beat a gun with a knife or unarmed etc. But Joe the 40yo with the bad back or Jill the office clerk or Jane with cancer might not be able to fight off Steve the 200lb part time bouncer part time criminal even if he’s unarmed. But they can all likely muster 5lbs of pressure in a finger to shoot his ass.
The reason stories like this make the news is... they’re news worthy. They don’t happen every day. It usually goes the other way and most of the stories that go the other way don’t make the news unless someone is killed- and even then its local news most of the time and not every mugging or carjacking gets spread across the Internet because... those happen all the time. Nothing newsworthy there.
Not everyone is fit. Not everyone is a good fighter or even able bodied. Even then- in the ring and in the street world champion level fighters like Alex Gong can still have off days or just bad luck. We discovered real quick thousands of years ago that “guy with weapon” tends to have an advantage over “unarmed guy.” Some weapons tend to have advantages over others. Gun- that generally trumps most man portable weapons. That’s why you don’t see a lot of modern militaries saying “well- they have guns? let’s give our guys spears because they work better...” you don’t NEED a gun to defend yourself. Some people might. But without the willingness to use a weapon, and the training to use it effectively- it’s still kinda a crap shoot and you may be in more danger from your inability than if you were unarmed.
But it’s complicated right? No one KNOWS what would happen if we outlawed guns in America tomorrow. But there are enough guns and bullets that criminals would likely still have access to guns for decades while law abiding citizens were suddenly stuck with melee weapons or perhaps bows and arrows. You can make your own bullets. Plenty of people do. You can make your own gun ranging from barely functional to very effective for $5-200 with no special tools and a trip to the hardware store. If you have machine tools- like many Americans- you can make a VERY sophisticated gun- many gun and gun part makers make guns and gun parts at home that police and civilians buy. I know a guy with contracts for major LEO branches who does this.
Then there’s all the guns that get stollen from
Police cars, police officers homes, police stations etc. guns brought over the border from Mexico or Canada (which would become far more profitable once guns were illegal...) and now we have an emerging industry of 3D printed guns that is still not quite reliable but is working to catch up and 3D printing technology advances and lower costs in the future will undoubtedly assist in that.
So as cliche as it is to say- if you make guns illegal only criminals will have guns. The US lacks the protections that many other countries banning guns have. We have major surpluses of legal and illegal guns on our soil. We are connected by land to two countries that can supply guns, our borders are MUCH larger than most other countries and that size as well as political factors like our constitution, immigration etc. IE “American freedom” make it so that we can’t leverage the level of control we’d need to make sure guns weren’t coming through ports and borders.
Bro, they find DIY guns in prison.
Literally the most secure environment feasible, with no rights or privacy to speak of, and fuckers still have guns.
Unarmed Grandma vs 200lb Streetfighter is fucked.
Armed Grandma vs Streetfighter probably gets to walk away.
Armed grandma vs Armed streetfighter at least has a chance.
Unarmed grandma vs Armed streetfighter is literally no worse off than if neither were armed, except this time the casket might be open at the funeral.
We have a gun crime problem in The USA. But almost everyone seems to think the simplest solutions will solve it. If the problem was so simple, if the solutions were so simple- why wouldn’t it be solved? Why wouldn’t countries other than America with problems with armed citizens and gun crime have done them? People point to Europe and say “they did!” No. They didn’t. They never had a gun culture or gun crime problems like us. Let’s look at Mexico- who only has 1. ONE legal gun store and has effectively banned guns. Well... there is a lot of gun crime in Mexico no? A lot of guns in the hands of criminals. Look how well banning drugs worked to stop drug crime. Look how well banning prostitution and sex trafficking worked in America.
I used to live near 11 sex parlors in a major metropolitan area l, near a police station- some next to kids classes and family eateries and stores. Anyone could tell what they were and yet... you’d still see taxis and fancy cars dropping off johns who obviously didn’t belong in the area and didn’t come for the bodega.
We had a well known website that existed pretty much entirely to advertise escorts and “rub tug” massages. It was referenced in films, tv shows, by comedians, and finally got shut down. It was named after the fact that It was more common but is fairly common still to see local papers with ads for sex in the back. There are websites you can look at right now that is basically a YELP of escorts and sex parlors in the US with contact info and pictures-and address’s. We are a capitalist country with a hardline on freedom with our mantra and the driving force behind money and powering being the ability to give people what they want. People want guns. People WILL get guns. America is built on crime. It’s as big as Amazon or Google or Microsoft. It’s big business and someone is always willing to go to jail to get their piece of that.
How about just letting the people already authorized to have coffee take a test to see if they're qualified to have it in their classroom? Nobody wants to risk some coffee newb shitting themselves because they don't know any better.
Yeah, definitely 'nuff said... issue totally resolved. I'll replace my 12 gauge with a can of Nestlé so that if my house in the Alabama ghetto gets invaded, I'll be ready.
