Double yes. With even a single round trip domestic ticket often costing a whole paycheck for some people- and kids making most things at least twice as expensive- best believe it. Plus kids are unpredictable, and so is life. Put the two together and it’s just smart to have a big cushion for if (when) something goes not according to plan. It’s not just the cost of the flight- you likely have things like hotel paid for and even if you can get another later flight free somehow- you’ve lost time and money. It compounds, each thing adding more time and money you’ll waste vs being on plan. Dominoes.
flights get overbooked on purpose, get there early to secure your seat. If you're past closing of the check-in, don't bother saying "the plane hasn't taken off yet", that's not the point, airlines have to file an FAA passenger manifest, resubmitting the same manifest costs tens of thousands of dollars to the airline, so unless the passenger is willing to pay the cost of this, the airline won't allow anyone to check in.
