Of course that stuff ain't canon anymore, which is what Disney did I think. So they blew their own foot off with a shotgun

I think it might be harsh for a lot of people to hear, but the fact is the vast majority of people going to see a Star Wars movie don't give one shit about your favorite novel, comic book, video game, or even the animated series. If they can find some way to work little bits of those into the films then that's cool but there's no point getting upset if something doesn't go by some rule established in the Clone Wars or whatever

As others here have said- I think that many are taking this quote and running with it because they want something to be able to pick at for her. There isn’t a sting continuity in cannon- and even in non cannon there isn’t a huge pool of self contained stories they can realistically draw from as direct follow ups to the core trilogies.

That is to say- there is a shortage of stand alone material which relates to the core characters as a group and is coherent and consistent as a narrative. Marvel has 9,000 alternate realities and this and that, but they tend to have some consistently within an instance of a reality, and countless stories involving the core characters. For the most part- if you grab a compelling story line from one spider man universe- it will be able to fit with elements from another fairly easily. It will likely involve aunt may, a dead uncle Ben, Met Jane, etc. etc. there are storylines that follow up ROTJ- but it isn’t quite the breadth of material that a franchise like Marvel has if they want to choose story lines from.

And ultimately, have declared most of those stories non cannon does mean that they can’t use those story lines. The complex multi untwined stories of the EU tend to come as a package, and often require you be well aquatinted with history and events leading to each. Perhaps fine for super fans- but something marvel and other saga makers are trying to do is make films you don’t HAVE to know every detail of the franchise to sit down and understand the film.

Star Wars is a massive and complex universe that I quite like. As a kid I memorized bios and story lines and fake tech trees and all of it. Where ships were made and what they used to make them and where and by who and all of it. But- the majority of the audience doesn’t want to study 4+ years to be able to enjoy a movie.

Most of the EU is terrible, but there are a handful of gems on there.
