The line is certainly old. Tetris in the mid 80’s, Brick Breaker in the later mid 70’s, Pong in the early 70’s.... but if we are going for historical I’ll take the rocket ships from Spacewar! in 62. Not only the first recorded game- but it inspired the first commercial arcade game and from asteroids right up to No Mans Sky, it’s gameplay or features have been widely used to the present day. It’s biggest downfalls asides from lack of commercial leverage were that it was far too complex for both hardware a consumer could afford and for the time believe it or not- even a “simple” game like Mario brothers (original) was too complex for a casual or new player of the day.
