Just as a PSA: It generally ISNT ok to carry a hammer or other “not a weapon” weapon around. A KEY in almost in self defense case is context. The sidewalk is NOT a weapon- but if you bash someone’s head into it- legally it becomes a weapon because you used it as one. What VERY important is if you INTENDED something to be a weapon.
What that means is- a plumber walking from a job carrying a 3 foot pipe wrench- it is a tool. If they are attacked and in a situation where violence in self defense in legal- and legally it isn’t “disproportionate” to the threat to use a weapon- they would probably be ok to use that wrench. If an accounting student is carrying a hammer in their backpack.... unless they can give a reason to have that hammer- it becomes intended as a weapon. If they use it as a weapon on another human- there are good odds a prosecutor will say there was intent.
Police often won’t bother you about it- a hammer in your backpack they won’t see anyway most likely right? Say you had it on your belt... they MIGHT stop you- if it looked to them like you had no reason. A dusty person dressed as a contractor commonly does for work, at a food truck, near a known or obvious job site, with a full tool belt? Probably not a word. A woman in a ball gown down town at 11pm? They may stop and ask her some questions. Her answers to those questions might get her in trouble- and honestly police can find something that almost anyone is doing or has done as an excuse if you want to push them.
So just be careful. Be aware that your “totally not a weapon” you carry as a weapon- CAN legally be considered a weapon. I’m not your attorney and this isn’t legal advice. I’m just saying it so if someone out there gets the idea this is a risk free great idea- it’s something many people do- but it’s not completely safe.
If you keep a bat in your car trunk- keeping a ball and a mitt is a good idea. If you keep a gold club- if it’s only one beat it be a putter and I’d keep balls and a golf glove too. Maybe a plastic cup etc. if you’re gonna carry a hammer in your bag- maybe keep a small picture and maybe some nails so you can at least be on your way to hang the picture after you finish what you’re doing. Cops aren’t dumb though- and they can find something to get you on if they want so play smart and safe.
