They're combined in the U.S. The kid probably had a passport he could have used instead, but that's about it. In Germany, you have separate IDs?

Yup, we have a driver's license, an ID and a passport. Also do you not have to have biometric photos for your IDs/driver licenses?

We do on our passports. By July of this year, we'll be required to update our driver's licenses (to something called Real ID) to biometric photos in order to fly domestically.

We have an ID, a DL, and a passport in India. All of them require our biometric photos and the best part, any of them can be used as an identification method.
