Pigeons- aka “rock doves” are lovely intelligent creatures. They can see all the colors we can and then far more into the UV spectrum. They have shown certain capabilities only seen in some species of primates- and can even distinguish individual letters of human writing. Like dogs- pigeons have demonstrated the ability to memorize and use public transportation schedules- and they keep their young in the best much longer than many other birds- caring for and educating them. Some species can reach flight speeds of over 100mph in small bursts, and pigeons can memorize and recognize individual human faces- and distinguish people they “like” from ones they “dislike” based on past experiences.
All told they are wonderful birds and can make wonderful friends. For most people it may be better to befriend in the Wild than “adopt” as wild pigeons may not like being taken to captivity- especially if you can’t give them room and their bird friends and family. In captivity they can live 15 years and in the wild due to climate and predators and environmental hazards or disease etc they tend to live closer to 5 years. Be kind to Pigeons. They aren’t “rats with wings” or “vermin,” they are doves of a different color, and are intelligent birds with personality that are quite endearing when given the chance.
I need to adopt a pigeon to post letters in an old-fashioned way and a crow because they're smart and fascinating. @mr_pigeonwizard I'm going to try and follow your tracks!
Also, always bring food, it's easier to befriend them if you offer food
