there are a few complexities to this.
1. this used to be a feature. it was later removed and put into their premium subscription service.
2. it makes sense to not have it do so as they would have to either stop running ads for a backgrounded youtube or risk being sued by advertisers for only showing half of their ad (the audio portion when they are paying for their whole ad to be shown both audio and video)
now that its packaged into the premium subscription service they arent losing out on ads because premium people dont watch ads and they dont risk angering their source of money because premium people dont watch ads.
Mine does the same (also a Samsung) but only for some content. Mostly, it refuses to play music this way. Sometimes it won't play a video this way and I have no idea why, but usually it's because its music.
Neither does Netflix or Hulu or Disney+. The horror! These video sites want you to WATCH the videos. What next, books that you can’t read if you close them?
But - there are a lot of youtubers that you don't have to watch but can just listen to. Also enough people still use YouTube as a music source. While I have Spotify, my 5 favourite song compilations are not on there but on YouTube (I searched thoroughly)
That’s not the intention of YouTube though. It’s a video platform. You can use it for music, sure. But you really can’t complain that it shuts off when you are no longer watching the video. No other popular app for visual media continues to run in the background. They just don’t do that.
Also you can get YT premium if not being able to listen to videos truly bothers you. It also comes with YouTube music and google music. Voila! Now you can find your music and not watch it.
Youtube music is a thing, a big thing. It's a category that brings in a very large amount of their views.
Youtube isn't "for" any specific kind of video. It's specifically NOT for certain things however videos with no actual visual element isn't on that list.
“DescriptionYouTube is an American video-sharing platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. “ -The definition of YouTube.
It’s not for a specific kind of video, but it is for videos. Music Videos are still videos. There’s an entire separate app if you just want to listen to music.
Admittedly I’m unsure if YT music stops when closed and I agree that it shouldn’t. But realistically there’s no issue with the original video platform not continuing to play when no one is watching.
And not for nothing. I wish I could keep Netflix on in the background too. But understand why they don’t let us.
