I really find this type of behavior immature and highly stupid. I'm not a vegan but going to a place where people fight for what they feel is right just to make them sad/angry is an asshole move and won't help your cause. I feel this way because the rally wasn't promoting hate in the first place, which to me sets a big difference between this basic reddit guy (sorry to all non-braindead redditors) and for instance people kissing at an anti-gay rally as a way to defend their rights.

Depends what they were protesting specifically. If they were trying to ban the sale of meat or something, then go KFC guy. Hate isn't the only thing worth counter-protesting.
