I hate Bernie. But I can admit when he is right.
I nerve went to school in the Us but I was under the impresion that it was free or at least for low income families?
Yes. The problem with talking about the “US” is that you really have to think of it more like all of Europe. You’ve got states- which are like tiny countries that all agree to somewhat get along, but don’t much have a lot to do with each other- and each have their own laws and their own social welfare and other things. “Big” laws like Murder are nation wide- but even then the details and how that is handled can vary a little by state.
It’s good and bad- good because each state tends to have certain culture and heritage and values- so if you don’t like the philosophy one state lives by- you can move to another without changing countries. Bad because some people can’t really just move- and it can be confusing when doing certain things is legal in one part of the country and a crime in another. It can be upsetting or disappointing when another state sees things differently. Some states are very much about individual freedoms- and consequences- and don’t believe the state should be involved in people’s personal lives beyond making sure we can all get along and not cause trouble for each other- other states believe more that government should be used as a tool to enforce compassion or morality.
Enforced morality says we should collect taxes to pay for food or medicine for those in need- but it’s also the thing that says because some people think something is wrong like homosexuality or abortion that we should use the law to enforce those moralities too if that’s what the majority of voters decide is “right.” That’s the slippery slope- the tightrope of “American Freedom.” Between brutalist anarchy and totalitarian rule- most people think they are “right” and they are wanting what is “good” and there isn’t a truly impartial judge. If we let the mob decide everything then you are at the mercy of your neighbors. If we let those in power decide you are at the mercy of your sovereign. Most people agree hungry kids is bad- the disagreement is about who is responsible for fixing it and how it should be handled. So each state or even county is different and part also depends on how wealthy that state or county is etc.
