Another pro tip to making money as a photographer:
step 1: go get work somewhere like as an accountant, lawyer, engineer, etc. after a year or two buy some decent photography equipment.
Step 2: keep working that job, and then take pictures in your free time.
Step 3: look at your bank balance each month. You are now doing as well as the top 10% of photographers in the world! Congratulations. You made it. You figured out how to be a photographer and make a decent wage!
Alternate tip: while many people may not pay anything, or much- for your photographs- people usually WILL pay you pretty well for your camera (assuming you have a decent one.) So another way to make money in photography is to sell your camera on eBay. Many novice photographers make the biggest pay days of their careers this way.
* I’m teasing with love. I enjoy photography as a hobby (especially with my drone,) but one of my best friends was a photographer- and his father was a relatively high grade photographer who has taken cover shots for many high profile publications over his career. It can be very hard to make money as a photographer, and I tease- but having other sources of income can be wise- especially when starting out- but if it’s a passion one should follow it as far as they can. And the Wedding advice is good solid advice. Do weddings and portraits/commissions and spread word of mouth. Take good shots when out and about and opportunity arises. Post your work where it can be seen, and make submissions. Try local organizations and publications and look for professional work in advertising.
If you are lucky enough to be in an area with famous museums or zoos, landmarks, etc. or where films are shot- you can look for work doing things like documenting, or unit work and stills. Even taking reference shots and doing lighting tests is something for a portfolio and resume. Principal photography on a movie set can make you look pretty fancy to clients- and is a source of income.
