She wrote the letter during the announcement that the were beginning to look for astronauts. Obviously there was a process to hiring an astronaut before you had like, you know, an astronaut. And while the letter hasn't turned up, NASA themselves have said this actually lines up with what was going on at the time. And she didn't say she was fucking three years old, a lot of people consider early teens to still be a "girl." And the first women that tried to be astronauts, did not, in fact, get selected, because the qualifications to be an astronaut at the time required experience that could only have been attained through military service that women were not allowed to perform.

"NASA officials could not confirm the letter as official agency correspondence but said they had no reason to doubt its authenticity."

Well she obviously considered herself a little girl since that's how she chose to refer to herself. I'm at an age where I consider my twenties as having been a kid, and she's much older than I am

I was about to say the same thing- at a certain age- your teens can easily be seen as when you were a “little whatever” or child. Time gets funny as you age. You want to see a movie in theaters. You are busy and forget. Someone mentions it- you say “oh yeah that. I wanted to see that in theaters but missed it. I’ll catch it on video.” They say “it’s been out forever..” you say “what? That movie is only a couple years old...” they inform you that in fact- it is 5-10 years old. The same as the school year lasts forever to a child but a calendar year blows by for adults. The more time you live- the more it seems to pass quickly and the more it gets a little fuzzy. So pardon a person 50+ when they are off by 5-10 years on something. Older minds can, but don’t always keep perfect record of every event in a persons life.

Even if she’s not off 5-10 years, I think that when you are 50+ you’d consider a story from when you were 15 to be from when you were a little girl. Maybe it’s strange to think of it now because 15 year olds are running around looking like they are 25 but even for myself, saying I was a little girl before I hit 18 doesn’t seem strange
