It’s all a game of relativity isn’t it? Where does the money that the military spends go? The US military is the largest employer in the world. Between spouses, family, vets, reserves, contractors, and service members it is essentially a giant unemployment network. It is a MAJOR and leading contributor to funds in developing technology, communications, travel, medicine, and science. Computers, GPS, microwave ovens, jet propulsion- satellites, Many first aid techniques and supplies come from the military.

That’s without mentioning the local economies that get a “halo” effect from having nearby bases or ports. If you’ve ever seen a base closure you’d see what that can do- even San Francisco- one of the worlds leading economies- was shaped and still bears scars of the aftermath of major base closures from 2 generations ago.

Credit unions and other services that serve the community of service members, suppliers and entire industries such as aircraft are largely propped up by military spending. The church.... well.... however one feels about religion- there is a basic respect for people beliefs- and at least in principal- the church is supposed to (and many do) use funds to serve the community and provide for public good in practical ways such as food and clothing for the in need, housing the homeless, and so on. These are charitable contributions that any private industry or individual could write off....

.... and let’s not forget that churches offer other services like council such as family or marital advice. The fact that one doesn’t agree with aspects of their services or their philosophy is the exact same reason people try to use to defund planned parenthood’s- another community based service offering help to those who seek it- help based in their own philosophy which is largely based on individual judgment and an idea of individual morality- they offer things and it is up to people to decide which ones they think serve them best.

So while I DO think that churches should be held to a set of standards and requirements like any non profit- and that in general those standards should be more defined, stringent, and monitored and enforced as far as ensuring an organization is open to the public, that ALL services are available to any member of the public without bias and for no fee or flat fee- and that certain burdens should be met as well as fiscal responsibilities and limits on things like salaries and benefits or other “luxury spending”- churches do t just evaporate money either.

The Pope eats well and doesn’t miss many meals. This tv preacher or that one wears silk and drives a Mercedes- but most of the clergy isn’t living it up on tax free riches. Your “average” church isn’t marble and gold- and often it’s just a shared rec center or public space. You can’t defend NASA and go after the military- and to do the same with churches is a bit of a stretch.

NASA has a ROI of 40 to 1. It's the most cost-efficient and profitable (by percentage) government program designed in the history of our species. It has provided countless technological breakthroughs people like that jackass take for granted every day.

Yes, I also want to get rid of separation of Church and state, which was never America's policy anyway.
