two guys, father and son, the father a former cop, saw this black man out for a jog, they called 911 to report him, they followed him. The dispatcher was trying to ascertain what the man was doing wrong, they couldn't say anything, made up lies that he was robbing places. They stopped him and eventually shot him dead. The local proscecutor refused to press charges as they were friends, so did the DA, they were eventually arrested after an outcry.
Pretty much. Supposedly, this guy fit the description of someone seen around a rash of burglaries (that were never reported), and this gave these two men reason to corner him like an animal, and shoot him when he put up a fight.
Then someone released the video they took of the incident, thinking it would bolster their case. In reality, it backfired in a major way, and now the vast majority of people are siding with the guy they shot and killed.
Maybe, this will instigate some changes in that area (that part of the state is known for racism and "good ole' boy" networking).
they chased down a guy, armed with guns, based on him fitting a description (being black), i don't think they have much of a case for manslaughter. The father and son were both on the obese side, so seeing someong jogging, would be foreign to them, not knowing what they were doing.
When two guys pull a truck up next to/ Infront of you, and point a shotgun at you, it's perfectly reasonable for him to try and defend himself.
I might be very slightly tempted to believe it was an 'accident' , but then he followed it with 3 more shots.
It was a cold blooded killing, plain and simple.
Passing it through as manslaughter would be a crime in its own right.
@demon_razgriz one correction: there were three total shots, the final was the one that killed him. The father and son at one point were claiming self-defense because he was, as you pointed out, defending himself.
It was indeed cold blooded.
