While I agree that this is ridiculous- pay walls in research and a legal pattent and IP system that stifles discovery in its attempts to protect it- I also think that their language is precise- this is A measure, but not the measure or a definitive measure. Ironically- with any knowledge of data science we can intuit that this single data point, without context or validation, doesn’t hold any significance beyond as a marker- but a marker of WHAT or the impact of which would require study and support through the scientific method to have meaning.

In simpler terms- we CAN say from observation that scientist do tend to agree that pay walls hinder specialists in their research. However we can’t say that lack of access to scientific papers hinders non specialists- too many factors. It is also the case that to understand the science behind a research paper generally requires certain specialized knowledge.

Common examples include a network report or basic error message on an electronic device. “DCA server exception...” “java Lang null...” to the lay person- an IP range and port range and network map used by a specialist team is gibberish. When a technician says you have a P202 code and your detents for the counter shaft are out by .0001- most people will lot understand this because they lack the underlying specialized knowledge to understand the language used by specialists. This is why your mechanic might say to you “you have a bad oxygen sensor. It needs replaced.” Or your IT person will say “your network settings are wrong. I’ve changed them.” Those are terms a non specialist can understand- but you don’t understand the problem- you have AN understanding of the cause and solution.

A major factor in people not understanding science would be that science is getting more and more complex. It takes much more scope and depth of knowledge to understand at least the basic science of the wheel, or steel- than it does to understand the science behind sub quantum arrangement of materials science or a plasma reactor.

Math would be another major factor- even professional scientists have trouble with the math required for many modern scientific endeavors.

Science is a lot like many pursuits. People think it’s cool to drive a race car or be able to drive like a stunt person in a movie, to be a crack shot sniper, fly jets, be an accomplished athlete, etc. etc. these things are all “cool” but they involve a lot of effort, a lot of boring practice and discipline and study which many folks just don’t want to bother with.
