I like knowing that if I wanted to, I could go anywhere and do whatever I want. Join up with an ethnic militia in North Africa, try my hand at being a monk, fuck off to Brazil and see how high I can get before burning, go to Idaho and just chill, whatever.
It is a comforting thought.
Money can HELP in most things- money brings a sense of security. There is more than one “freedom.” The savage utopia is a natural state- where one is “free” to do anything they want provided they have the strength and ability to make their will reality. A place where every choice or chance of the universe can result in severe consequences and even death.
The other “freedom” is the freedom to exist in a desirable manner, with relative safety, and with insulation from consequences- safety nets. The first freedom exists in nature and is available to anyone- the later is produced through society and civilization.
On a 3x3 island far from all men- in the middle of a vast lake full of ravenous giant sharks- you are completely “free” to do anything you want... BUT- if you leave that 3x3 island- if you go for a swim in those beautiful clear waters... you’ll probably be killed by a giant shark. You are “free” in the savage utopia- but to exercise that freedom you must overcome the sharks. If you can’t- then you are a prisoner. Freedom is a measure of self actualization in the savage utopia. Results are all that matter there.
So you have this “freedom.” You can punch a police officer. Nothing is stoping you. But if you do not have the self ability to avoid the consequences of this action- the fact you are “free” to do so doesn’t mean much since you effectively cannot do it regardless. All freedoms are conditional in that sense- you are free upon the condition that you have the ability to act upon and enforce your freedom.
So without money- he homeless feed and shelter themselves with little or no money and no “fixed” source of income. Survivalists live in nature as humans did for thousands of years. Walking is free, hitchhiking is free as are train jumping and etc. you can use free public libraries to find free bicycles and even rarely free cars. It comes down to luck, ingenuity, and ones willingness to take a risk. Money (in society) makes sure that if something goes wrong you don’t have to rely on just your wits and whatever is on hand to get on track.
About 6 years ago (age 35) I really just gave up trying to be happy and decided to be busy instead. Have been suicidal numerous time starting at age 16, tried and failed several methods. Latest was called suicide by steak, where I was barely exercising and trying to eat out several times a week (enter quarantine)... TLDW... I've decided that if I ever get properly suicidal again, I'm instead going to turn full Dexter Morgan / Punisher / Equalizer B/c I feel the world needs someone like that.
It is a comforting thought.
But here's the thing, everything requires money. At least to get you started.
