I'm outside LAPD funding and jurisdiction.
Real shit, though "Defund the police" is too extreme for ME, and I'm the resident anti-aithoritarian nut around here. When did the blue cities get more libertarian than me?
defund doesn’t mean take all their money away and dissolve them entirely, it’s more so focused on the fact that many police departments have unnecessarily large budgets that are higher than the military budgets of some other countries
Okay, that makes sense.
But honestly, people don't seem to want to think things through. Like let's just dismantle the police department, nevermind that we'll have no one to come when we're getting robbed, and fuck the actual good cops on the force, they don't need a job to help feed their families.
The budget for the LAPD was close to 3 billion dollars last year, while the emergency management departments got less than 100 million. Something is deeply, deeply skewed when it comes to our ideas to what actually stops crime and helps people vs what looks neat.
Generally, those fancy cars are cars confiscated during drug deals. As for defunding the police I'm all for imposing restrictions and defunding them if they do it reasonably. They should get rid of the unions. Make it merit based and impose much stricter physical standards. Part of the problem is that many police officers are physically incapable of taking down an assailant without resorting to weapons. This means they are forced to upscale the conflict just to resolve it.
I think a police force of some kind is necessary. People calling for the disbanding of the force is short-sighted (in my opinion). Granted, I am from NZ, so my view of police in general is much different than somebody over in the States, due to the differences in structure and behaviour. We recently went through reform here by disarming the police. That may sound foolish, but here in NZ our culture revolves much less around guns, so they're not as necessary for policing.
What we need is a night watchmen system, not defunding or abolition.

Friendly reminder that defund doesn’t mean stop paying them altogether, it just means defunding a certain amount of their wages, since the vast majority of county money goes to them, to spend it in other areas that will help out the locals more.
Seeing as how they're using the word interchangeably with "abolish": big DOUBT.
Also, cops are underpaid already in the places being looted, so that's just fucking stupid.
