I began to try learning new languages, but I'm really fuckimg shit at it. I just can't keep any of it in my head.
I took two and a half years of Spanish and every ounce of information from that class is gone. I took a year of Mandarin and the only thing I learned was that I had Yin and Yang mixed up. I tried to learn Japanese on my own to mess with my brother but literally just completely forgot I wanted to the moment I did something else (and now he's moved out so it's pointless).
@timebender25 Some people just don't have a head for languages, which is totally okay! If you seriously want to learn, my best advice is do it every single day. Even if you just spend 15 minutes reviewing what you already know, the routine of it solidifies the language in your mind. I heartily recommend Duolingo, which is the best at teaching grammar and conjugations as opposed to just flash cards of common phrases like Memrise. If you go back to Spanish or Japanese you might find that the information isn't gone, just buried deeper and it'll be easier to learn and remember on the second go.
I was using Diolingo for Japanese. I got a notification a week later where the Duo bird said, "We're sorry to see you go".
I completely skipped the legendary Duo threats, and just straight up made the bird depressed.
Duolingo is far from perfect but it's the best free language program. Everything else doesn't actually teach you a language; you just learn disconnected words and phrases with no context. Which is fine for some people but if you want to say you're learning a language you have to get an idea of the foundations (how to form a question, conjugations, etc.) which Duolingo does give notes on.
It is so far from the best language program. There's actually a polyglot that is creating his own language app, so I'm holding out for that one. Once you get basic grammar structure down, delete Duolingo. It's not good for anything else. 80% of language is vocabulary. Memrise allows you to create and learn courses that other people have made. I don't know if you've actually tried Memrise, but it also includes sentences. (It has a beta grammar thing, but its eh)
I'm good at learning languages, but excellent at forgetting them. I need to practice my German&Portuguese because they're rusting, and take back on my Japanese because I lack time to learn further and what I have retained is degrading rapidly.
That would be lovely!! I shall warn you I'm no advanced learner however. I know just a little bit more than the very basics (introducing people, numbers, directions, stuff about time).
Nope! I'm a self learner so I have tried quite a few books until I found some that worked for me, I use Harrap's express (surprisingly good but almost no kanjis), japanese in mangaland and a few random others. I'm going to see if I can find the obento pdfs online! (I also have a shit ton of pdfs/epubs of Japanese language books and even a little audio so if you need some...)
I have no books or such to share, but feel free to ask me anything about the language or about living in Japan.
I have a Dischord user, but I'm not familiar with the app yet.
You should join the funsub Discord. I’ll get you a link.
The Obento books are what I used in high school. They have good activities in them to increase learning, such as “read the text and answer the questions”
discord.gg/sGbYDsX
It also covers the grammar in an easy to understand way which is nice. I’ll actually have to track mine down myself and review it lol
Ok I'll try to give it a go! Haven't found the pdfs yet but I'm going to see if I can find a used copy.
Thanks for the link! My workplace blocks Discord so I'll check it at home!
I learned another language a couple years after English (my mom's from another country), so I used to use it a lot more, but I've fallen out of practice. I'm still fluent, but I've forgotten a few words and phrases.
"Been studying through high school, now I'm graduated and wanna get back into using language apps like Memrise"

Search up the 100 most common words in the language.

Took it until the end of high school. Planning to continue it later this year
Did you use the Obento books?
