I don't understand how this is not common knowledge already, but there is that much air in the bag so the chips won't brake while being transported. If the bags where filled you would just have small bits of chips, then you would complain about that.

Though you could still have it inflated and a lot of chips in it too...

You could- but then they’ll just charge you more. 2x the chips is still 2x the cost. But then the cycle just repeats to a point where the bag size gets ridiculous. Since the person buying the bigger bag would still, or maybe even more so- be likely to complain. If they feel cheated buying a $3 that’s mostly air- buying a $6 bag that is even more air- would likely cause the same response. So they COULD increase the bag size and price again- but it becomes circular until either a bag of chips is priced too high for most people to bother, or people start to say: “what am I going to do with all these chips. I throw most away. Why can’t they make bags with less chips....?” And then... we start over I guess when people start getting upset about how few chips there are... and repeat.

or they just have chips that are a consistent size and shape, and put them in cans like Pringles

Then... why not just buy pringles? If that’s what the market wanted- it’s what we would have. Of course- Lays DOES make their own “chips in a can” like pringles. They just aren’t as popular.

Also, it’s not air. It’s Nitrogen gas. This keeps the chips crispy. So it’s not just a cushion, it’s also a preservative.
