"This app can collect info about hardware", "view everything 'network related", "check whether you're rooted/jailbroken".
This is nothing more than a misinformed Tumblr detective doing their absolute worst, again.
Every app can do all of the things listed here, but once again "this company is Chinese so it HAS to be working solely for the CCP".
Remember when faceapp came out and allowed everyone to make themselves look old? That Russian owned app. Yeah, they shut up about that pretty quickly.
Also, fun fact, Steam does everything listed in the post. So does Facebook. So does a plethora of other apps designed by companies both inside and outside the US.
Most apps can see if a device is rooted/jailbroken.
Most apps can see your 'all network info'.
Most apps encode media before sending back to a server / to it's recipients.
Yeah I came to say that, it's really crazy what a lot of apps do. I can't view pics I take with my phone because I didn't allow the Gallery to make phone calls and access other info (I think it was texts, or contacts) and apparently that is a sine qua none condition. I honestly consider going back to a standard basic phone.
I mean, to be fair, to my knowledge Steam doesn't have any active concentration camps, forcible castration, hasn't tried a hostile takeover of a separate country, isn't in any border wars, hasn't used fabricated sanctions to extort people, hasn't taken any foreign nationals hostage or put them to death over cell phones, doesn't black bag people, hasn't censored Winnie the pooh, doesn't pretend Tiananmen Square never happened, isn't forcing people who disagree with them to scream "I won't kill myself" as they're dragged away; hasn't deliberately shot anyone in the eye, isn't excruciatingly racist, doesn't torture, hasn't been the epicenter of some of the worst viruses in memory, never welded anyone inside their apartments, never tried to keep corona virus a secret, doesn't actively censor western media in western countries to make themselves look good.... Etc ad naseum, because I'm too damn tired to keep typing
Not to mention when companies harvest your data in countries like America, there is the possibility of recourse. Success is fairly unlikely, but not impossible. If China does it, you're fucked.
.
So, yeah, idk I tend to take it a bit more seriously when China's the one doing it.
.
.
Side note: everyone has shut up so hard about FaceApp it was literally on the news a week and a half ago. Mind you this was just so some Russians could assure us that Russians would never spy on us, which was amusing
I mean, if the concentration camps are the only thing you're hung up on, feel free to ignore them O.o
.
But either way, most companies in China are pretty well run in deplorable conditions. So even if you separate all that out, it doesn't leave Tik Tok in BETTER standing over most companies based in North America.
.
Though many of them profit off of using Chinese labour anyway. Hard to take on them all. Still.. At least for this starfish, could make a difference.
.
Either way, if you WANT to use Tik Tok go for it. All this post is saying is to be aware of the sheer volume of data they are harvesting, and exactly which country that data is going to.
Sadly we here in the US seem to be on our way out. We've squandered nearly all of our advantages on the world stage other than sheer military strength. It's quite sad really.
China has gotten way too far with it's censorship in most countries - including America. It's gotten bad enough that I think it was Ted Cruz proposing that any company that caters to Chinese censorship be disqualified from receiving government funding. Or something to that effect - don't quote me on it, I've barely slept this month.
.
Canada's still debating on whether we risk our autonomy by negotiating with terrorists. China's had two canadians in prison for over a year and won't release them unless we give them the Huawei bitch back.
.
China's way overstepped it's bounds across the board. America's the only one China will ever respect even remotely (out of fear), but they're growing bolder and bolder
