I was also thinking of this story the other day and what I find really whacky is that as a kid I was taught that in primary and middle school like "this is a man of committment and sheer fucking will" (he is, big time) and somehow it was supposed to be an inspiration. Bitch he died while doing so, our inspiration should have been Claude Chappe who invented the optic telegraph thus enabling faster and safer communications.

In reality not “very likely” but there’s a version tjst historians like to tout that gives Pheidippides 250ish km to run and not the 40ish km that is in a standard marathon
