In the US adoption laws vary by state so this is only true in some states

Yes. Only 6 states specify you can adopt someone once you are 18. 3 states are 21, 2 states it is 25, and then at least 5 other states that require you to be at least 10 years older than the child you plan to adopt. The rest don’t really specify age limits- but as a minor you’d need your parents consent to adopt, an agency willing to adopt to you, and likely a court would get involved and a judge would have to rule. That is ambiguous but unlikely. BUT- there isn’t really a lot of need traditionally for such laws because the average domestic adoption costs $25000-50,000 and international (legal) adoptions usually more. You also have to generally meet certain criteria for consideration as fit to be a parent, including certain financial barriers that there really haven’t been too many cases where a minor could meet all the requirements to actually test what would happen in modern law.

"but as a minor you’d need your parents consent to adopt", sucks for those orphans needing to be adopted

??? I’m not sure what to make of this. To adopt is the act of adopting another person. To be adopted is to be the one who is adopted by another. You do not need a parents consent to be ADOPTED, as a non emancipated minor who wishes to adopt someone else, you’d need a parent, legal guardian, or other agent to act as you wouldn’t have the legal standing to complete the process most likely.

I’ll just add that this post doesn’t specify anything about the US as well as the fact that the only place other than the US that I can be bothered to google, the UK, requires age 21 to adopt a child.
