Relativity. The percent of the US population or world population is a seemingly small number- but when framed as an actual number of people- while again relatively small in comparison to total US population- it’s still more people than most people will ever meet in their life times- and most people wouldn’t consider it small if every single person they knew or ever would meet was dead. 5 million is actually more people than 50 average people will ever meet.

It’s also a larger number than the population of some countries as this illustrates- and while people may say “meh. It’s a small percent (of US population infected with Covid)” most people would do a spit take if they read “every single person in New Zealand is dead this morning...”

So don't hold nations that different to the same standards.

Simply put- examples like this usually aren’t meant to be direct comparisons. Humans on average aren’t great with cognition of math. Most people think 50/50 are “good odds” (they are not...) the lottery is another example of how mathematical fallacy works in the human brain as are things like people routinely thinking that they are safe to drive over the speed limit or do XYZ thing but someone else doing it is not. We are bad with conceptualizing math- especially on a large scale that is beyond what we can directly relate To from first hand experience- so this reframed it into something somewhat more relatable. “It’s not a lot of people..” “ok. Imagine if this country vanished.” “Wow. That would be a big deal.” “Yes. It would.” End scene. It’s just meant to impart in concept to a mind that can’t grasp the math basically.

Well yes. And no. I think that trying to force Italy to adopt the same tax structure as Cuba would be rather silly. Outlawing right turns on red lights in America because red turns on red lights aren’t legal in Japan ignores some fundamental differences in how things work. But holding ANY country to the standard of “don’t let millions of people die...” is actually, I do believe, a pretty universal standard. Wether you have 10 million or 400 billion people in your nation- unless you’re willing to say that the life of any individual is devalued because there are plenty more left- holding any nation to “don’t let millions of people die from easily preventable causes” is maybe... a perfectly fine standard to hold everyone to.

But- side thought here- as a person who has made numerous appeals to individualism and personal freedom famousone- if we would say that 5 million human lives aren’t a big deal because they are ONLY a small slice of a bigger pie- if a man’s life is worth so little then why would his freedom be worth anything? What would be the problem with tyranny if it ONLY affected a small percentage of Americans? Food for thought- and before you reply with some fine bravado about how death is preferable to loss of liberty- please do consider that a non binary thinker would realize that they can generally keep their life and also secure their liberty- that dead patriots can’t keep actually fighting- the hard part, much easier than dying as a self made martyr.

Do also consider that the wizened don’t tend to open up with martyrdom but save it as a last resort. The young and inexperienced tend to think that the sacrifice gives meaning as opposed to the sacrifice being the result of meaning. That is the difference between a fanatic and a believer, a kid (or terrorist) and a fighter. The former only THINKS they understand why they died- but the haste only shows that they really didn’t understand at all.

Hey what did y'all think of Umbrella Academy season 2? I thought it was a fresh departure from season 1, a lot more of a fun romp, while not losing too much of the somber tone.

@famousone- you typed a good long reply there about how much of a meanie I am and how wrong I am... but as usual... you make no mention of how or why. You do understand that saying someone is wrong because you “feel” differently isn’t actually something we an discuss? I am interested in others views if they actually say something, can defend them, and don’t fold up the moment the facts they based their argument on are shown to be false. Not as a matter of opinion- factually incorrect.

What you believe is a separate matter from fact. You can believe anything you want to. When you believe something and say “I believe this thing because 1+1=3” and someone says: “1+1 doesn’t equal 3. Here is proof...” and the reply is: “well that changes nothing...” what do you say to that? Why even try and legitimize your beliefs using pretense of fact if the facts all apart but the beliefs remain?

Also.... not to seem condescending... but I do have to ask if you understand what binary is- your usage makes me unsure.

@mrfahrenheit- I actually haven’t even seen season 1! Shameful. I have been wanting and meaning to though. The trailer for season 2 looks interesting. I just haven’t had the time and energy to start a new show.

There's a whole episode with a character who works in a strip club. Why? No reason

Lol. Tits asides I like love death and robots. If you’re having trouble getting into it- my recommendation is to not try and watch it too seriously- what I mean is to not carve out a block to watch or binge- but to just kinda watch an episode here and there in between things. There isn’t really a continuity and some episodes are better than others based on taste.
