This is why I use string.
And always use the SAME ruler to measure when measuring with a ruler.
We needed boards for my daughters race car bed. Yes she had a fisher price race car bed.
But it doesn’t come with springs or boards.
So we went to Home Depot to get the boards.
I had used 2 strings to measure length and width.
My husband said they aren’t going to let you use that to measure the board for cutting. I said yes they will just watch.
So I get the board ask for help cutting. I tell him I have 2 string he says perfect. He uses them to measure marks it and cuts.
We get home board fits like a glove.
My husband said I refuse to look at you right now because I know you have a smug told you so look on your face.
From than on he measure with string.
My family has many wood workers and they all swear by string measure.

I learned to always measure from the 1 (cm, in) mark

Plus, after you use it a bunch, the rivets that hold on the end piece open up the holes in the tape, so you get like 1/8" of play in there...

Measure twice cut once. Set up a template if your doing alot of measurements. Start from the 1. Same tape measure. Making a string for a template is a one Is good too

I had this happen on the first table I built and it screwed up my design and I didn't notice til halfway through. I just switched my design up slightly and said fuck it. Instead of my table being smooth on top, it was more like a picnic bench with like... a thin open strip between the top planks, which in hindsight was prolly better, as because the pranks were rounded, if they had fit the original design it would have these long grooves where small things would have annoyingly gotten stuck instead of just falling on the floor.
