I think smiling at the camera is rather difficult, and often end up looking forced, unless there's something amuzing happening, however, as long as you're not doing the 'Kubrick stare', you'll be fine

The "look down, think of a loved one, look up" technique usually works for me (when I'm not uncomfortable enough to forget about it).

I always try to get myself to laugh before taking a photo. Leads to a way more convincing smile.

This is me but a camera being around is irrelevant. I'm just uncomfortable.
