This meme has degraded a lot over the years.

They don’t fire Dave. They may fire A “Dave” and make the other Dave’s work harder to make up for it. When the other Dave’s fall behind it justifies not giving raises and possibly pay cuts. But there are always more Dave’s if that Dave quits. We have a president who built an empire and a campaign on Daves. Dave just keeps coming back no matter how you exploit him, or another Dave who hasn’t learned their lesson. New Dave’s are made every day. The kings of old lived on the backs of Daves. Finally Daves overthrew the kings and then they... found their own Daves to live off of. People with money and power, smart ones, know they need Daves- there are just so many Daves that they don’t particularly have to worry about a few Daves as long as they keep the majority of Daves working, and either complacent or too busy fighting other Daves to fight them.
