My aunt Pat bless her heart adored butterflies.
One day while in her garden she noticed a butterfly who looked weak. It was an extremely hot day in Texas.
So thinking it needed water because it has been a drought she went inside and went to get water.
But due to the water in her well not good to drink she decided to get a water bottle from her fridge. BUT she didn’t have a cold bottle so she grabbed all she could which was a cold blue gatorade.
The butterfly was still there when she got back to it. She poured a little into the cap of the drink and placed it next to the butterfly.
It placed its little straw mouth in the drink and drank and after a few seconds it flapped its wings strong and fluttered away better than before.
I had some tadpoles in a kiddie pool this summer. It was meant to be a nursery pool for ducklings and once they were old enough to go to the pond, the chickens would drink from the pool. Usually I dumped it every few weeks and filled it with fresh water, but with all the tadpoles, I had to settle for overfilling it it enough to filter the water some. It was fun watching them grow.
Also, in the 90s there was a drink called Orbitiz. That was more like drinking tadpoles than bubble tea. It was great.
Over the last couple of years I've been working on this little stream/pond thing in my backyard. I finally got it right and decided to see how long I could keep it going before freezing this winter (live in MN, US). Around November, wildlife started using it as a water source (birds, squirrels, & chipmunks). Now I HAVE to keep it from freezing. Not easy when last night it was -12 F. Definitely worth it though, even lugging five gallon pails of water from the house. I may look like a lumberjack, but I get to feel like a Disney Princess.
It tends to be difficult for animals to find clean running water in the winter. I'm not sure if finding some kind of agitator or heater might help keep the water from freezing for longer on you?
They make little heaters you can put down inside water basins for livestock. Some place like Tractor supply could help.
It never gets old, seeing the wild animals.
Thanks! That's all that's saving it right now. It's a little circle heater thing that keeps about a 4" hole open in the ice, but it allows the pump to go. Also, never lived around chipmunks before. They are cute as F!
