I think the French are very particulate about pronunciation. I don't have a large vocabulary in French, but my pronunciation is very good. I hardly ever have French people try to switch to English. They never do it when my wife with 1/4 French blood opens her mouth.
If a French person switches to English for me, I keep responding in French and they switch back. I don't always get it perfect but I appreciate their patience.
Schade, aber das ist schon recht. Es ist nett von ihnen, dass sie leichter für mich es machen wollen. Aber ich will trotzdem lernen.

I'm not even sure we germans generally want to make it easier for foreigners when we address them in english, it's rather to show off how sophisticated and urbane we are. New York? Tokyo? Wuppertal? All one place, veere all togezher in zhe global villiage, u know?
.
Oh, and to add a little french attitude: it's: "Es ist nett von ihnen, dass sie es leichter für mich machen wollen" lol
Oh, thank you for the correction. I actually do appreciate it when fluent speakers take the time to do that. That's what I meant when I said I wanted to learn.
