The reason why fridge has a D and refrigerator does not is because fridge is short for frigid air not refrigerator.
The original refrigerators that no longer needed ice, was marketed that they had frigid air so no need for ice.
See originally refrigerators was a wooden cabinet and either above or below would be a compartment for a large block of ice that the ice man would deliver every week like the milkman would deliver milk. They would take the ice to each house and put it in the refrigerator (or as many people called them icebox) for them and it would stay cool and keep the food in the cabinet nice and cold.
So you see when the refrigerator no longer needed the ice to keep everything cool they told people that it was due to frigid air.
Because there was a company named Frigidaire they had their name printed on the front of their refrigerators. And the name came from Frigid air. And well you put something like that in homes of southern people and boom Fridge.
That's a lie. Fridge is just a clipping of refrigerator. Instead of making it 'frige', they added the 'd' to make it mimic the sound of the 'j' as in 'badge' etc.
Actually the Oxford English Dictionary describes “fridge” as a colloquial abbreviation for “refrigerator,” a much older term that showed up in the early 1600s. It suggests that the ‘frig’ spelling may have been influenced by the brand name “Frigidaire” (a play on “frigid air”).
So ha lol.
I noticed we skipped the part where they described it as colloquial - which itself suggests that it was accepted and used by people, despite its lack-of-formality or true purpose.
Take that how you will, but it could mean you are right on the grounds that it was “technically wrong” ie “frigid air doesn’t equal refrigerator”
Or you could say it’s colloquial like “donut vs doughnut” where people just can’t be bothered to do it correctly so we said “screw it”
