Only thing I can think of is if they were trying to show someone biting their nails but had no idea what biting looked like

He's chewing off the sides of the fingernail. I know I'm not the only one who does this *stares at jagged, bloody edges of fingernails*

hangnails, i get these on the one finger every 2-3 months, but i usually just grab tweezers, or pliers, and just pull it out. Doesn't hurt as much as it used to, but can go deep, few months ago was a big one, took it out slowly and could feel all the nerves tearing. was oddly satisfying

Yeah. Hurts so good and then you have the self-loathing afterwards which is a bonus.
