Same goes for the bronze age collapse and the fall of Rome. Had their wisdom and knowledge been preserved, the world now would look mighty different, not for better or worse though, humans do as humans does...
We wouldn't have been anywhere special without the collapse of library of Alexandria. Sure it's a tragedy and a big mistake/ stupidity on the part of Caesar, but the library was burned three times. The last one being around 650 CE. And even if we ignore all of that.
.
The library was already collapsing well before the burning, new places were popping up, Alexandria no longer had the exclusivity. It's definitely a tragedy, in a loss of not only precious knowledge but priceless history and it's artifacts, but humanity wouldn't have had landed on Mars by now or something.
Same thing with the sacking of Baghdad. Prior to the Hunns sacking it and salting their fields it was THE center of learning in the world. They used to actively collect copies of every book they came across in the world. Had scholars whose sole job was copying and collecting knowledge. They were centuries beyond the rest of the world in certain things. They even used to perform cataract surgery.
