Well Twitter kind of trapped themselves
`
Either it ISN'T a human right - in which case they have no basis to complain for receiving the exact treatment they've subjected others to. Actually, many would argue they received BETTER treatment, because the Nigerian government actually has a point saying Twitter has no basis to interfere with government matters to this degree -- and the Nigerian government actually gave a specific reason WHY Twitter had been "cancelled" -- something Twitter often fails to be specific (or consistent) about
`
OR, alternatively, Twitter IS a human right.... In which case... Twitter has committed how many human rights violations in the last Day, let alone week, let alone year...?
`
`
Needless to say they deleted the tweet, but these fuckers' grand hypocritical stupidity deserves enshrinement. The clapback has been fittingly hilarious
So, I would very much like to point out a huge difference here. Twitter is a private corporation. The law allows them the ability to dictate what speech can and cannot be voiced on their platform. The Nigerian government, on the other hand, is, well, a government entity. Their action is absolutely a violation of the human right of free speech of their citizens. Private corporations and government entities are *not* equivalent, and are held to different standards.
I don't understand how people can keep hopping from one side of the fence to the other (not you btw just in general).
`
Trump wasn't allowed to block people on Twitter because everyone is afforded access to the president.
`
Now Twitter actively censors and interferes with a Government's ability to interact with it's citizens -- something they claim is a human right -- and people want to say that's okay because Twitter is a corporation
`
I don't know anything about Nigeria's free speech laws so I can't touch on that. However, To my knowledge (i could be wrong) in no way is any government obligated to allow any corporation to operate within their country -- especially if said corporation IS interfering with government matters
And further still-- as a corporation, Twitter could actively be held accountable for what goes on on their platform... and yet to avoid this they claim NOT to be publishers, while simultaneously acting AS publishers in every way, shape and form by banning and censoring people -- not for breaking the law (or even their Terms of service), but simply for voicing facts and opinions Twitter doesn't want out there
`
And they do all this while claiming to be for free speech.
`
There is so much DoubleThink going on in this narrative i'm surprised I haven't developed split personalities at this point
`
In any event, whatever anyone's opinion on the issue, I, personally, will continue to enjoy Twitter being forced to swallow some of it's own bitter, toxic poison
Again that's not at you, shephard -- you raise a valid enough stance, I just don't personally agree with the doublestandards Twitter expects to constantly get away with. Nigeria is far from the only country that is tired of their BS
`
Eventually Twitter IS going to find itself pinned on one side of the fence or the other, and I don't think Twitter will enjoy the reckoning it faces when it does
TBF, both sides can be guilty of doublethink. Many of those being whipped into a mob about Twitter "censorship" are the same ones who want athletes to be cut and fired for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality, and constantly say that it isn't illegal because it's a private business, so they can do what they want. And to be clear, I would support the rights of the teams to cut athletes for that, because they *are* private businesses. It only gets dicey if all the owners collude to prevent those players from being signed afterward, because that violates the CBAs of the leagues.
Eh I'd argue those things are slightly different. Twitter is a platform presented FOR speech. That's the entirety of what they do -- communication. And, further still, communication between actual governments and their people. Something they actively encouraged - and then when they got it - started abusing. Which brings us back to the whole "we're not responsible for the content on our site, despite the fact that we actively silence people at our own discretion" shtick
`
`Granted, no one was forced to use Twitter in the beginning (and largely still aren't), but because of the nature of the beast, it becomes much more difficult to interact with people without it
The NFL (or whichever) on the other hand is about... chasing a ball around. At no point that I can recall seeing is it ever presented AS a platform for speech -- indeed, players often can and are fired or suspended for the things they do or say on or off the field. The closest it comes typically is with the half-time shows, which used to be just flashy entertainment, but have now been turned into political platforms
As a Nigerian, Twitters’ response is correct. The presidency is ruining the country with corruption, unnecessary borrowing and stupid policies that endangers life of millions in the country. The presidency and politicians are angry because Nigerians use Twitter as a platform to hold them accountable. The country is riddled with armed robberies, terrorist attacks, bandits, fulani herdsmen killing people in their own homes, kidnappings are an everyday occurrence, police brutality and so on. Twitter is the only space where the youth can openly talk and hold the government accountable both in local and federal levels, which the government doesn’t want, mainly because it embarrasses them.
The government with it’s policies make it hard for indigenes to do business, foreign investors or businesses are almost always frustrated until they leave( for reference uber, shell, chevron and Gokada amongst others). Inflation rate is through the roof. Naira losses value per minute, so many families can’t afford to feed 3 times a day. Even medical personnels are frustrated until they leave the country, the government is not helping in anyway to retain talents in multiple fields. Even Nigerian is looking for a plan b, a country to move to, not because they are lazy but because the system is built to frustrate the masses.
Lastly, freedom of speech, expression and love is a human right. Having a community and a platform where i can express my feelings and frustration is a right than no person should take a way from me. Buhari is a dictator in a democracy. A democratic president shouldn’t threaten it’s citizens with violent and death threats just because they are protesting for better standard of living.
