As they should. Jk, but every person I know who "hates cats" has only ever met asshole ones. Problem is - they come in all shapes and forms, even when it comes to personality. There are asshole cats just as much as there are asshole humans, or maybe both have just been raised wrong. Don't condemn the whole species because of one bad experience.
