Yeah I thought names like that were from those areas, and have been around so long that they’re our “normal”, or were altered variations of them. Plus the fact that Christianity and its names swept the entire world like wildfire....
My name Dustin which is considered a Norman name (iirc), but is believed to come from the Scandinavian name “Torsten” Which is where most of my family hails from.
Correct me if I’m wrong friends.....?
I have no clue on the Dustin being descended from Torsten part (though it sounds really cool, even if it wasn't true it's a good story to tell to people) but yeah Biblical names have of course been adapted to most Western languages. Of course Simon wasn't originally read like in English, in Hebrew it's closer to Shi-mon, and Jesus is Yeshua and so on and so forth.
Do correct me if I'm wrong on the correct pronunciation of the names, I don't actually speak Hebrew, but the point stands, just about every Christian country adapted the names into its language.
This was my understanding as well ^
just like “Jesus” as Yay-shwa versus JEE-zus versus HAY-soos
It’s all based on how you look at it.
Dustin’s origin is considered “unknown” from what I’ve read, the Torsten connection is the only one I’ve ever been given and can truly verify.
2. How do you know these names weren't originally common in the middle east?
