"4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag (d)The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general." So much for respecting the rule of law. Womp Womp.
Flag code isn't law. And really, respect or disrespect for the Flag is more about intent than practice.
In Basic my Senior Drill Sergeant had a really tattered old thing in the bay that had been on a FOB in country. Nobody can accuse him of disgracing it, though it "should" be burned or otherwise destroyed with the condition it was in.
Also worth noting, they aren't wearing flags as clothes. They are wearing clothes that mimic the flag.
Additionally, most soldiers have worn a flag patch with a subdued pattern. That is, colored in shades that mimic the pattern rather than wearing a red, white, and blue beacon that would ruin any attempt at camouflage. Should we be accused of or punished for disrespect?
Not at all. That's barely a good start for a hunter, let alone a hobbyist, prepper, collector, competitor, or even someone who wants the major calibers covered.
