I'm from Taiwan and I studied 6 years of Chinese history in middle school/high school but I remember that Mulan is actually just a really long poem that no one know for sure if it's real or not. It also doesn't get into the details of whether or not she had her parents consent?
Now that I googled it, the poem is apparently called "The ballad of Mulan" and it's the only time she has ever been mentioned in history. (Some other texts mention the ballad but that doesn't count)
