Ah, that does explain it. And I'm gonna guess he said something he shouldn't have, and now there are two camps at each other's throats over a guy who cares about neither of them.
He's also a big name in UFC, and is well known for just having conversations with people about their experience, expertise, and recreational drug use.
@happy_frog
He didn't say anything terribly recently. Someone just put together clips, and then people who were already trying to cancel him made it viral. And mostly a lot of people are just asking "So what?". Just about everyone I went to school with has said "nigger", the teacher insisted on the hard 'R'. Who didn't read quotes, or Mark Twain?
Honestly, I am willing to listen to folk who are offended by racial slurs, if they are offended by all racial slurs, reject any pop culture (music, movies, books) that uses any, and refuse to use it or associate with people who do. I still think it's pretty weak though. Being called "wetback", "beaner", "chief", "red(skin)", or "savage" never ruined my life. But if you hate Rogan for saying "nigger", you should hate everybody else who says any slur, too. But it really is okay to just not care.
Yes. That's exactly what it is. A recollection of what I've been through in school, and a recollection of what I've been through in life. Thank you for stating the obvious?
Is my real life experience so repulsive to you? That I refuse to grant so much power to mere words?
What's your opinion on common curses and epithets? How can you function in life with such thin skin?
Swear words are a bit odd. To start with, a word is just a word right? Why would calling someone dumb be any worse than someone smart? Well… the words themselves are just words- but the word is linked to a specific meaning and context. It has meaning and association. We have many words meaning the same thing. A doctor may need to refer to a patients anatomy. In that context, saying “vagina” or “vulva” etc may be appropriate. It might be slightly inappropriate to use that word to describe your boss to their face. It would generally in the United States be very inappropriate for a doctor or a subordinate to use the word “c$nt.” These words have severities which aren’t inherent to the word, but they are inherent to the context, association, and history of the word. “Feces” “dookie” “poop” “turd” “$hit” each has its own impact and it might be odd for a gruff SOB to say “I need to tinkle…” writing and poetry use the weight of words and their meaning,
It isn’t so simple as words are words.
The use of that particular slur and the discussion of it is complicated. Without looking at the history or anything else, it might seem a bit odd that there would be a word which was somehow “forbidden,” more so than basically any other word- but also a word which was so forbidden- but not to everyone. Some people could seem to be able to use it in various contexts, others not at all. In a vacuum that would seem odd. I could write 900 pages and barely scratch the surface, but in short, the history of race relations in the United States and the enduring prejudices and legacies of prejudices in our society are at play.
It isn’t really up to any one person to decide who gets to use that word. Not even all black Americans agree on wether it is ok to use that word or not. It’s up to each of us to decide for ourselves wether we will personally use that word, and how we will react when we hear that word spoken by someone else.
I can’t tell joe Rogan he can’t use that word- but as a person from a group that historically subjugated the exact group that word specially refers to, and as a person who lives in a nation where that group is still fighting prejudice and injustice, Joe Rogan and any other remotely mentally typical person should be well aware of the context of the word. We can argue there are academically appropriate contexts or not- but if I see a person who knows full well using that word will likely cause offense using it, it’s their right to say a word and it is my right to shape my opinion of a person by what comes from their mouth.
So as for the question of it being odd that only one group can use the word- it really not all that odd when we add context. If someone calls their spouse “my little whore” as a pet name, they may not appreciate it if you call their spouse that. You may not appreciate it if they call YOUR spouse that. Your spouse may not appreciate it if you call them that.
You almost definitely won’t appreciate it if they call your mother that.
But why the offense? They’re words, and besides, that person over there said it to that other person- why isn’t it ok for everyone to say it to anyone?
Under examination we can see that even removing the slur aspect, there are simply some words that can cause offense when used by certain people or towards certain people. Even a word like “sex” which isn’t a slur or even vulgar- if you tell your boss you’d like some sex, that may or may not end well. As adults we should be familiar with the concept that not all words are appropriate for us to use.
I'm not parsing through your dissertation. I'm just going to say that it is wrong for anybody to use any slur or nobody. I will add that my prior use of the slurs was in matter-of-fact tone as I was responding to a post that clearly invited discussion of slurs, and recalling my academic history and personal experience on the receiving end of slurs.
I'm also gonna say that our recent issues aside, @guest, it is nice that someone is responding who HASN'T treated my name like a vulgarity or referred to me by a politically charged variant of the slur "retard" @happy_frog I'm talking about you. Stop pretending to be offended.
No happy frog is just trying to sarcastically make fun of random people that come in to start shit/ward them off.
Because calling them out before they say anything is the best deterrent
What? No, I'm actually calling that fucker out. When I'm not an unperson they'll censor my name or refer to me by a politically charged variation of "retard".
As a person who hasn’t been involved in yalls arguments, but have glanced at them from the sidelines, I think you’ve made a certain lens of each other that recontextualises everything the other person says. We get it. Your differences in political views and ideals have caused you to enter heated arguments in the past, and now you hate the other person on principle.
The thing is though: arguments do fuck all cos y’all will die on your hills. And that’s fine. Just keep in mind that nothing you say is going to change anyone’s mind
I don’t hate famousone. I am sometimes disappointed as I believe they are capable of more in some cases.
With few exceptions, (such as bigotry etc) it isn’t the conclusions I have issues with in most discussions in general with any person. We all have our opinions.
My focus is how we come to those conclusions. A view I don’t agree with isn’t a “bad” view, but when a person reaches a conclusion and can’t either admit that conclusion isn’t logical but is emotional or based on biases; or cannot defend their logic or explain how they reached a conclusion using objective evidence- there is a missing mental step.
Im more interested in checking the mental math. Often times people see this as challenging the validity of their beliefs- especially when they can’t explain the A to B. But yeah. I don’t hate famousone at all.
My points track. My internal rationalization in the argument around slurs is entirely consistent. Especially given my own racial and cultural background.
I wasn’t referring to you specifically. I was speaking in the general. I referred to you specifically when I said I don’t hate you, when I said I like to check the metal math I was speaking about me and how I generally approach these things. I do understand that the way it is written could make it seem otherwise, that was not my intent nor was it specific to this thread as dragon baby was speaking about overall in general discourse across multiple topics.
@SuperDave It's honestly beyond ridiculous that you have to be dragged here, but I feel it needs to be on the record. And since there are no mods
.
What we have above is a discussion of slurs. Some of them could be considered highly offensive.
.
Famousone mentioned some such slurs for the exclusive purpose of discussion. They were directed at no one, answered the original question, and often referred to language used against famousone over his own racial identity.
.
For some reason happy_frog has decided to imply that this should be mass-reported for the purpose of, presumably, getting famousone's comments removed or banned. Considering happy_frog is the one that POSTED the post referencing slurs in the first place, this seems entirely disingenuous.
.
I don't know how the flagging system works, but I feel this should be on record in case happy_frog does manage to convince people to mass-report.
If this is to be a website where we can't even discuss the existence of things on posts about those very subjects than what in the goddamn fuck value is the comment section remotely
At least if the post is removed now it will be because SuperDave made some kind of informed decision, not because happy_frog cried crocodile tears and an auto-ban system kicked in.
.
Nevermind the fact that happy_frog literally started this in the first place because he can't cope with the fact that people he doesn't like may exist in the same space as him.

Not the first harassment campaign I've encountered on this place, and likely won't be the last.
