Lol. I suppose it’s ironic- but we don’t know enough from a picture to know the polymer used for the cable tie either. It could be made from all sorts of materials or using bio plastics.
Of course- bio plastics pose their own problems and aren’t a catch all solution- they are still a major marine threat and complicate the end of life waste processing system. Bio plastics also have their own impacts on the environment and often are derived from potential food sources- which feeds into issues concerning environmental and social impacts of large scale commercial farming and food scarcity in the world.
I guess it may be a “noble” ideal to end fossil fuel dependency or at least reduce it, but the truth is the only concept we have of a “world without oil” is a world without modern technology. So ingrained are some things in society (like oil) that it’s almost impossible to avoid them. Even evangelizing on the internet means you are in some way benefiting from oil.
There is no single magic thing that can eliminate all our social and environmental problems while keeping or expanding on our modern technology and standard of living. These problems require that multiple tools be used for the right problems and behavioral changes along with revising our perspectives and outlooks.
The cable tie and, most likely, also the plastic in their glasses and clothes does illustrate how infiltrated the use of oil based products are. Either way, you gotta salute the conviction.
