It wasn’t actually always allowed. Several examples include:

Wearing a medical mask or most types of face covering other than those of a religious nature is not protected under pretty much any status independent of mandates and as such an employer can (where no mandate or protection exists) force employees to remove masks as part of a dress code. Humorously to the point of the meme- the freedom to wear a mask has historically been restricted because it is deemed that wearing a mask can pose a potential threat to public well being or commerce. Social pressure and confrontations have often occurred in…
.. the past as well as denials of service or damage to career or social status where people have decided to wear face coverings in situations where peer groups considered the behavior inappropriate or upsetting. We can certainly see that the same arguments can apply to either scenario.
I have discovered, that wearing a mask when sick is probably a good idea. I went to church recently wearing a mask, I was the only one at that particular church wearing a mask, and someone approached me and said that I should put more faith in God, because "He is greater than coronavirus" and I was like "uh I have strep throat" and he responded "ah" and then awkwardly shuffled away. So that's my go-to now. Just feign another illness. No one argues with strep.
I got fired from a chicken processing plant because they only approved a half day off to see my doctor who diagnosed me with strep gave me the shot and said I needed to take a full day to give the shot time and even gave me a note. But then again this was pre-covid.
