Awfully short sighted aren't they? Do you know how many people listen to books while they're working out? I know I do. Then not only do you get the know the book but you also get the benefit of the workout.
i was literally thinking this like what if the entire time the person bodybuilding was listening to podcasts to further their knowledge while they furthered their gains?
Ah, I wish I could do this but I've noticed that trying to focus on both the book and the workout makes me half ass both. In the end I don't feel as good about the workout and I don't remember much from the book.
I guess the most disturbing thing about this mentality is that the only reason to work out, to lift weights, to build muscle, is cosmetic. As if there weren’t legitimate health reasons/outcomes to building muscle. As is books and read knowledge was all there was value.
Sure, and if you give up a home and work part time so you can afford food and a place to shower you can go to the library and get an easy 20-100 hours more a week to read too.
It may be shocking, but few people are all consumed in life by one thing. We might read a book and then put it down and go for a hike or play a new game or care for pets, or any number of things we also enjoy. No matter how much you read you will never read ever book ever made, and for most people, they aren’t interested in every book ever made- just the ones that catch their interest. Saying “if you didn’t work out so much you could read more” is like saying “if you didn’t read so much you could put that knowledge to use helping people…” asides both fitness and knowledge having their uses in life, those things and the journey to acquire them are also about growing and changing as people. Fitness isn’t just a physical change, it is usually a mental change with its own lessons and character building.
In short- reading is great. Being fit is great. Doing what you enjoy is generally great. Life hinges on time management and priorities.
You can have big muscles, have a career, read books, have a dog and a family, take vacations, watch some tv, and much more. It all depends on how you manage your time and where you decide to put time in as a priority. I love reading, it isn’t the only thing I love in life though, and like anything I can have moods where I want to take a break from something I love and do something else. Don’t be jealous just because other people are in better shape than you, or because you can’t manage your time to allow you to do the things you love and stay fit.
