I think what they’re trying to get at here is that farmers are detached from the customer. They don’t know who the food is going to.
But the problem is… they know the food is going to /someone/
I’m sure they understand that food is important to society.
Not to mention farmers have very very low job security. Weather, economy, soil quality, disease, etc
Could all send them into poverty
I feel like maybe what he was saying is being misinterpreted, and possibly I'm the one misinterpreting it. What he's saying is that we aren't being fed, as in, we don't all just get free food out of the goodness of the industries heart. We work and earn money to buy food, we feed ourselves. It's a business, not some wholesome virtuous act on behalf of people that grow wheat out of kindness.
What you're not taking into account is that Herbert seems to not be very bright
